Cuttack/Odisha, Nov 5 : The Central Range Police have intensified their crackdown on the illegal manufacture, storage and sale of firecrackers ahead of the Diwali festival, with 64 cases registered across seven districts between November 1 and 3, 2026. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Central Range, Dr Satyajit Nayak, IPS, has directed all Superintendents of Police (SPs) under his jurisdiction to take stringent action against illegal firecracker manufacturing units, unauthorised warehouses and unlicensed sellers to prevent accidents and ensure public safety during the festive season.
According to a special situation report on illegal storage of firecrackers and explosive materials, a total of 64 cases were registered during the three-day enforcement drive. Puri district recorded the highest number of 13 cases, followed by Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur with 12 cases each. Nayagarh reported 10 cases, Kendrapara eight, Jajpur five and Khordha four cases. The district-wise figures reflect the enforcement action undertaken by the police across the Central Range.
Dr Nayak has instructed district police authorities to constitute special teams and conduct intensive inspections and raids at suspected firecracker manufacturing units, storage facilities, warehouses and sales outlets. Police have also been directed to identify individuals involved in manufacturing or selling firecrackers without valid licences and storing explosive materials in violation of prescribed regulations. The inspection drive will also cover licensed traders to verify whether they are complying with mandatory fire safety arrangements and other statutory requirements.
The IGP has emphasised that illegal storage and handling of explosive materials pose a serious threat to human lives and property, as any negligence could trigger devastating fires or explosions. Such activities will not be tolerated, and strict legal action will be taken against those found violating the law. The police have also appealed to the public to inform their nearest police stations about suspicious firecracker manufacturing units, illegal storage facilities or unauthorised sales. Dr Nayak stressed that public cooperation, along with proactive policing, is essential to prevent mishaps and ensure a safe, peaceful and incident-free Diwali across the Central Range.
