Tata Power Skill Development Institute Sets Up 5 Green Energy Skills Centres in Odisha
By Subrat Sarangi
Bhubaneswar,Odisha: Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI), the skilling arm of Tata Power Company, has established five Green Energy Skills Centres in Odisha at Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Sambalpur and Berhampur during FY26, aimed at strengthening technical skilling infrastructure and building a future-ready workforce for the state’s evolving energy ecosystem.
The initiative is aligned with the growing need for trained technical manpower across Odisha’s expanding power and renewable energy value chain, including the increasing adoption of rooftop solar systems under national and state-level clean energy programmes, viz. PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) and the ULA initiative.
The centres are designed to deliver structured, hands-on training in electrical systems, rooftop solar installation, operations and maintenance, electrical safety, and customer support services, thereby enhancing employability and practical field readiness of youth and technical personnel.
TPSDI is an approved training partner of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and a Dual Awarding Body recognised by NCVET, enabling it to deliver nationally recognised certifications. It has also been entrusted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) as a key skilling partner under the Government of India’s flagship PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY).
As of April 2026, TPSDI has trained 847 youth/personnel across these five Green Energy Skills Centres in Odisha under specialised technical and green energy-focused programmes. These include a mix of vocational, electrical, and solar-oriented skill development modules aimed at improving job readiness across the broader energy sector.
In addition, nearly 3,000 youth/personnel have been trained to date under various technical, vocational, and solar skilling initiatives across Odisha, with further programmes being planned to address the growing requirement for skilled technicians and field-level personnel in the state.
The expansion of skilling infrastructure comes in the backdrop of increasing momentum in Odisha’s clean energy ecosystem, including rooftop solar adoption under schemes such as PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and the ULA initiative, which is driving demand for trained manpower in installation, maintenance, metering, and field operations.
According to inputs from channel partners and implementation agencies, demand for trained electricians, solar technicians, and field personnel has been steadily increasing in line with the scale-up of distributed renewable energy systems across districts.
Through this integrated skilling approach, Tata Power-led initiatives are contributing to strengthening technical capability, improving employability outcomes, and supporting long-term workforce development in Odisha’s power sector ecosystem.
Tata Power-led Odisha Discoms remain committed to supporting the state’s clean energy transition through sustainable infrastructure development, consumer-centric initiatives, and structured capacity-building programmes.
