Matikhala sets a National benchmark in rural solar adoption in Odisha

By Lipsa Priyadarshini

Berhampur, March 20: In a landmark step towards India’s clean energy transition, Matikhala village in Odisha’s Ganjam district has emerged as a model of rural solar adoption, setting a benchmark at the national level. Fully solarised under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (ULA Model), the initiative demonstrates how decentralised renewable energy solutions can transform rural livelihoods while advancing sustainability goals.

Implemented by TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL), the project has covered all 200 eligible households in the village, each with a contract demand of 1 kW. Every beneficiary has been equipped with a 1 kW rooftop solar system, enabling households to generate their own electricity, significantly cut dependence on conventional power sources, and reduce monthly energy expenses.

Located under Kanamana Panchayat in Chhatrapur block, Matikhala’s transformation highlights the effectiveness of targeted policy implementation at the grassroots level. Under the ULA model, beneficiaries contribute a nominal amount of Rs 5,622, covering the cost of solar panels and meters, making the scheme both accessible and affordable. Designed for long-term impact, these systems are expected to provide reliable energy for up to 25 years, ensuring sustained benefits for rural households.

With complete coverage of all eligible families, Matikhala now stands as a fully solarised village under the scheme. The Ganjam district administration played a crucial role in facilitating financial support and ensuring smooth execution, further strengthening the model’s success.

The project was inaugurated by Krushna Chandra Nayak in the presence of senior officials and villagers. Among those present were Keerthi Vasan V, Collector and District Magistrate of Ganjam; Amit Kumar Garg, CEO of TPSODL; and Sambit Sangramjit Sahoo, BDO of Chhatrapur.

Speaking on the occasion, Nayak emphasised the government’s commitment to promoting clean and affordable energy solutions at the grassroots level. He noted that initiatives like the scheme are empowering rural households to adopt solar energy, reduce electricity costs, and move towards self-reliance.

Highlighting the administrative drive, Collector Keerthi Vasan V said the district is actively promoting solar adoption across panchayats through coordinated efforts with stakeholders. With a target of covering 50 households in each panchayat, the administration aims to scale up the initiative, encourage self-help groups to participate, and expand access to clean energy across rural communities.

Reaffirming TPSODL’s commitment, CEO Amit Kumar Garg stated that the solarisation of Matikhala marks a significant step towards rural energy independence, paving the way for a cleaner, greener future.
