Rajendra University hosts lecture series on ‘Freedom and Determinism’

By Mahendra Darjee

Balangir, Sept. 3: The Department of Philosophy at Rajendra University, Balangir, organised a lecture series on Tuesday under the theme “Cow-in-Rope: Freedom within/from Determinism.” The series, inspired by the metaphor of a tethered cow moving freely within its limits, explored the complex relationship between human agency and life’s constraints.

The event opened with a welcome address by Dr. Raj Kishor Patra, Head of the Department of Philosophy, while the programme was introduced by convenor Dr. Banshidhar Deep. Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) Prof. P.K. Dash and keynote speaker Prof. Gopal Sahu, Head of the Department of Philosophy at Allahabad University, were ceremonially felicitated. Student cultural performances and formal introductions by Dr. Pankajini Mulia and Sri Xavier Xess added a vibrant touch to the programme.

Prof. Dash, in his address, highlighted the relevance of philosophy in understanding human life and its practical dimensions. Delivering the keynote lecture, Prof. Sahu emphasised that freedom does not stem from the absence of constraints but from the meaningful navigation of those very boundaries. His thought-provoking lecture (11:30 am to 12:50 pm) drew wide participation during an interactive Q&A session.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Prasanta Banerjee and Sri Pintu Das. The session left the audience with a profound reflection: true freedom lies not in escaping limitations, but in mastering the art of living meaningfully within them.
