Solar Spark: Tribal Odisha villages embrace a brighter, safer future
By Rupashree Mohanty
Bhubaneswar, July 16: For generations, residents of 21 isolated tribal villages in Odisha’s Kalahandi and Rayagada districts lived under the dim glow of lanterns or open flames once the sun went down. Today, that long-standing darkness is giving way to well-lit paths and renewed hope — courtesy of a solar lighting initiative spearheaded by Vedanta Aluminium, India’s leading aluminium producer.
As part of this sustainable rural development drive, 96 solar-powered street lights have been installed, illuminating public spaces in these hamlets for the very first time. The initiative now directly improves the lives of over 5,000 residents, enhancing both visibility and safety in village surroundings after nightfall.
Aimed at bridging critical infrastructure gaps in remote communities, the programme envisions setting up 150 solar streetlights at key village points including marketplaces, school premises, entry routes, community centres, bus stops, and central pathways. The solar push is expected to boost local mobility, strengthen safety, and allow for extended social and economic engagement post-sunset.
In addition to social benefits, the project supports environmental sustainability by helping reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 22 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually. The effort aligns with Vedanta Aluminium’s broader community upliftment agenda and reinforces several UN Sustainable Development Goals—namely SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, stated, “Our community development efforts are crafted around local realities. The solar lighting programme in Kalahandi and Rayagada stands as a testament to our inclusive approach to growth and sustainability. The lights are already fostering a sense of safety and opportunity for these villagers.”
Local representatives have echoed this sentiment. Jagannath Naik Nayab, Sarpanch of Sunger gram panchayat in Kashipur Block, noted, “This project has not just brightened our surroundings but has also strengthened security and improved daily routines. We appreciate Vedanta’s genuine engagement with our community’s needs.”
