CHHATRAPUR, SEPT. 8: In a bizarre incident, sorcery rituals are being conducted at Chhatrapur in Odisha’s Ganjam district to make a dead child alive.
The rituals which started on Tuesday will be conducted till 4 pm on Saturday.
According to reports, the parents of the child were assured that their son would be alive by 4 pm on Saturday following the rituals.
The deceased child, identified as Sainanda, son of Sachidananda Sahoo of Sundarpur village under Chhatrapur block, – had breathed his last on Tuesday following illness.
According to reports, Sainanda, who was suffering from fever, was first brought to Chhatrapur Sub-Divisional Hospital for treatment from where he was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur.
Later, he was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where he breathed his last.
Instead of taking the body to crematorium at his village even after the child was declared dead by the doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Sachidananda brought it to his home after his family felt the dead son alive.
As per the suggestions of few villagers, the body was taken to a mango garden where a woman sorcerer assured the family to bring back their dead son.
On being informed about the incident, police reached the spot where the family and villagers prohibited them to enter the garden. They urged the police to wait for a day till the dead son wakes up.

BHUBANESWAR, SEPT. 6: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday warned the factional leaders of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) against any indiscipline and advised them to work together for return of the of the party to power in 2019 assembly polls.

Mr Gandhi, during his 20-minutes interaction with at least 35 state Congress leaders who were called to Delhi for consultation to choose a new PCC chief in place of incumbent president Prasad Harichandan,  also categorically told the delegates they would duly be rewarded in the party forum as per their performances.

“Rahul Gandhi asked all the leaders of Odisha to bury their hatchet and work for the party. He also warned against any kind of dissidence and indiscipline. The PCC will soon have a new leader,” said former chief minister and veteran Congress leader Hemananda Biswal.

Sources informed that Rahul took suggestions from all the leaders with regard to their choice of state leadership and most of the leaders took the name former PCC chief Niranjan Patnaik.

After the meeting, Rahul first met Niranjan Patnaik separately and later held similar meetings with senior party leaders Bhakta Das, Chiranjib Biswal, Naba Das and Pradeep Majhi.

Reportedly, the Congress high command has almost decided to appoint one president and three working presidents in Odisha for the smooth functioning of the party.

Moreover, Bhakta Das is likely to be given independent responsibility as the chairman of the Campaign Committee.

“Rahul has made it almost clear that Chiranjib Biswal, Pradip Majhi and Naba Das will be appointed as working presidents,” informed a Congressman on conditions of anonymity, who was present at the meeting.

Party sources said the Congress vice president advised the party leaders at the meeting to strengthen party organization in coastal, southern and western parts of the state while emphasising that people of Odisha always preferred and believed in collective leadership.

“Rahul Gandhi gave several suggestions to the party leaders at today’s meeting. He said under no circumstances indiscipline will be tolerated. A new chapter is going to open in Congress from today,” informed Niranjan Patnaik talking to media persons after his meeting with Rahul Gandhi.

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 6: A young girl has survived an abduction bid at Acharya Vihar here in the city by successfully fighting with the kidnapper.

The girl, who on Tuesday lodged a police complaint, – said an unidentified man tried to abduct her at knife point while she was standing in front of her hostel in Acharya Vihar area in the early hours on Monday.

The victim had arrived here from Rayagada and was waiting for someone to open the main gate.

Unware of the miscreant approaching her, she was speaking to someone over mobile phone. In no time, the man wearing a helmet to cover his identity approached her and put a knife on her neck.

The brave girl put up a fight against the assailant while he dragged her till some distance.

After a brief struggle, the anti-social gave up and fled from the spot on a two-wheeler.

The incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed outside the hostel.

Following this, the girl filed a complaint with the Saheed Nagar police station which is hardly 500 meter from the crime scene.

In her statement, the victim told police that around 3-4 people in a car at a distance also followed the motorcycle. The men in the vehicle might be a part of the plan, she suspected.

On the other hand, the owner of the hostel said that the inmates are a panicked lot and are scared to move out after the incident. Anti-socials are roaming and troubling the girls since few months.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Satyabrata Bhoi said the police had started investigation into the case and assured that the culprits would soon be arrested.

SAMBALPUR,AUG. 23: Following the suicide of a Class 10 girl in Dhanakauda of Sambalpur district allegedly under influence from the controversial Blue Whale online mobile game, the Odisha police has registered an unnatural death case and started an investigation into it.
Parents of the girl on Wednesday registered a case in local Dhanupali police station blaming the online game for the death of their daughter Suhani Rout. They alleged that their daughter took the extreme step after getting addicted to the game.
The local superintendent of police (SP) Sanjeev Arora, however, ruled out the claim and said the exact reason of the suicide could be known after the probe process is over.
“During preliminary investigation the name of Blue Whale was mentioned but there is nothing in that respect. We have seized her mobile phone and sent it for verification. Family disturbances for various reasons could be the reason behind it but the facts will be clear once the investigation is over,” said Mr Arora.
However, mother of Suhani said she suspected her to be addicted to Blue Whale game.
“I am not sure about the game but there is something unnatural about it. My daughter was not one who would commit suicide,” she added.
Earlier on Monday, Suhani’s parents had found her hanging in their house. They rushed her to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

Bhubaneswar,Aug. 23: Odisha agriculture minister and senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Dr Damodar Rout on Wednesday advised yoga guru Baba Ramdev to quit yoga and join politics.
Reacting to Ramdev’s suggestion to Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik to join hands with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in building a ‘new India,’ Dr Rout who is known for his witty observations and tongue-in-cheek remarks, – said, “If the yoga guru quits his present profession and join politics it will be good for him.”
“It’s time now for Baba Ramdev to quit yoga and do active politics. That will be good for him. What proposal can he give to our leader Naveen Patnaik? Ramdev should know that India is a federal country. The country comprises 30 states. Whoever is the Prime Minister of the country will give equal attention all states. Ramdev should rather tell the Prime Minister to understand the constitution and extend cooperation to the state government,” remarked Dr Rout.
Ramdev who arrived here in the morning to attend a conference of Patanjali product distributors, while speaking to reporters at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) had said that Naveen Patnaik and Narendra Modi should join hands.
“See I being a yoga man, I wish Naveenji and Modiji join hands,” Ramdev commented, making an indirect reference to the bitter ideological battle the BJP and regional BJD are fighting these days to assert their political supremacy in Odisha.
The yoga guru had said that Odisha has vast natural resources, agriculture, agriculture related industry and human resource which have huge potential.

PHULBANI , AUG. 23: An under-trial prisoner was on Tuesday made to walk to court with handcuffs in broad daylight on a busy road here, breaching a standing directive of the Supreme Court, – report said on Wednesday.
The incident sparked strong reactions from intellectuals.
The under-trial prisoner was identified as Chitrasen Mallick (30) of Tidingpanga under Baliguda police limits. He was forced to walk to Baliguda court in handcuffs on a busy road.
According to reports, Chitrasen was arrested by the excise police on charges of illegal liquor trade in October 2016.
Since then, he has been lodged in Phulbani jail as an under-trial.
On Tuesday, Chitrasen was to be deposed before Baliguda court for a hearing. Instead of taking him in a van, he was forced to walk in handcuffs at around 10 am on a busy road guarded by four police constables from Phulbani jail here to the bus stand from where he was taken to Baliguda in a bus.
Even as the Supreme Court has ruled that the authorities cannot handcuff under-trial prisoners while being taken to the courts or brought to the jail, the passersby were surprised to witness the scene.
“We had made arrangement for a van to take the under-trial prisoner to the Baliguda court. We will examine under which circusmstances he was hand-cuffed,” said Reserve Inspector Dharmendra Pradhan in his clarification about the incident.
Superintendent of police Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said action will be taken against the staff after probing the matter.
