World Physiotherapy Day: From Pain Relief to Prevention, Movement Takes Centre Stage

By Tapaswini Sahoo

Bhubaneswar/Odisha, Sep 10 :As the world observes World Physiotherapy Day, health experts are highlighting the growing role of physiotherapy beyond injury recovery, with greater emphasis on prevention, physical activity, rehabilitation and maintaining an active and independent life.

With prolonged sitting, excessive screen time, sedentary routines and reduced physical activity becoming increasingly common, musculoskeletal problems such as neck pain, back pain, shoulder stiffness and poor posture are being reported across age groups. The changing lifestyle has consequently increased the importance of physiotherapy in preventive and rehabilitative healthcare. The role of physiotherapy has evolved significantly over the years.

According to Dr. Saswati Suchismita (PT), “Physiotherapy is not just about treating pain after it occurs; it is about helping people move better, prevent problems and maintain their independence. In today’s sedentary lifestyle, movement itself has become an important part of healthcare. Early attention to posture, mobility, strength and physical activity can go a long way in preventing minor discomfort from developing into chronic problems.”

This year’s World Physiotherapy Day highlights the important role of physiotherapy and physical activity in cardiovascular health and stroke prevention and recovery. Regular physical activity can help reduce cardiovascular risk, while physiotherapists can guide individuals towards safe and personalized exercise programs. Following a stroke, physiotherapy can help improve mobility, balance, physical function and independence.

The benefits of physiotherapy also extend to older adults, helping maintain strength, flexibility, balance and mobility while reducing the risk of falls and supporting independent living. Structured rehabilitation can further assist people recovering from surgery, injuries and neurological conditions in returning safely to everyday activities.

As the focus shifts towards preventive healthcare, physiotherapy is also gaining importance in helping people address movement-related concerns before they become chronic. On World Physiotherapy Day, the message is clear: movement is not only essential for recovery but also an important part of disease prevention and long-term health. Greater awareness can encourage people to stay active, seek timely professional guidance and make healthy movement a part of everyday life.
