Vijender Singh reposted Rahul Gandhi’s tweet jabbing PM, joined BJP day later

New Delhi,Apr 3 : Just a day before joining the BJP, Vijender Singh, India’s first Olympic medallist in boxing, had reposted a tweet of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi jabbing Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In an unprecedented move ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Vijender Singh joined the BJP on Wednesday in New Delhi in the presence of party’s National General Secretary Vinod Tawde.

Even on March 31, Singh reposted Rahul Gandhi’s tweet which alleged that PM Modi wants to change the Constitution by winning Lok Sabha polls by “match-fixing”.

Soon after ditching Congress, Vijender Singh said, “I have joined the BJP in the interest of the nation and to serve the people. I want to help more and more people”.

When asked about the recent wrestlers’ protest against the BJP, he said, “I will continue to call wrong as wrong and right as right and will work towards strengthening athletes”.

Singh took a plunge into politics in April 2019 by joining the Congress. He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi but lost to BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri, who also won against Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Raghav Chadha.

Over the last few days, Singh’s name was circulating in political circles as Congress’s nominee from Mathura, a constituency currently represented by the BJP’s Hema Malini, as per news agency PTI.

Vijender Singh hails from the Jat community, known for its significant political sway in several constituencies across Haryana, his home state, as well as western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Notably, Singh also participated alongside Rahul Gandhi during the first leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra in January last year in Haryana’s Karnal. Several pictures of his march with Rahul Gandhi went viral on social media.
