Vedanta showcases AI, digital technologies in coal mining

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 9: Vedanta Aluminium has showcased the use of artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring and digital mine-management systems across its coal mining operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh at the sixth Coal Log India (CLI) Expo 2026 in Kolkata.
The company displayed its coal mining assets at Kuraloi, Jamkhani, Ghogharpalli, Radhikapur and Barra at the three-day industry event held at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. The showcase focused on the use of technology to improve mine safety, equipment utilisation, operational visibility and coal dispatch.
An integrated operational dashboard deployed by the company provides real-time data on equipment utilisation, coal exposure, dispatch and stock quality. The company also demonstrated AI-enabled surveillance and other digital systems aimed at strengthening safety monitoring and operational efficiency.
“Technology is emerging as a key enabler of safer, more efficient and responsible mining,” Amares Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines, said at the event. He said the company was using digital technologies and data-led systems to improve safety, operational visibility and efficiency across its mining operations.
The company’s employees also took part in a business-to-business panel discussion on digital transformation, sustainable coal stewardship, mine development and asset management.
The Vedanta stall was inaugurated by Alok Perti, chairman of the Indian Coal Forum and former secretary, Ministry of Coal; Kapil Dhagat, chairman of the Coal Producers Association; and Partha S. Bhattacharyya, chairman of the Peerless Group and former chairman of Coal India Limited.
Perti said technology and innovation were increasingly influencing productivity, safety and resource efficiency in the mining sector. He said Vedanta’s integrated coal, power and aluminium operations demonstrated how technology could be used to support industrial growth and modernise mining practices.
The company also used the expo to showcase products made by members of self-help groups supported through its community development programmes around its coal mines.
According to Vedanta, its community initiatives covering education, healthcare, skill development and livelihoods have reached more than two lakh people across 26 villages.
