Bhubaneswar, April 18: Marking World Liver Day, Utkal Hospital organised a series of awareness activities, including a mini marathon, and announced a major medical milestone—three successful cadaveric liver transplants within a single month.
Around 300 participants, including men and women from across the city, took part in the morning marathon aimed at spreading awareness about liver health. This year’s theme, “Solid Habits, Strong Liver,” underscored the importance of preventive care and healthy lifestyles.
The event was flagged off by Chief Guest Akshaya Kumar Sahu, alongside Guest of Honour Bibhuti Bhushan Nayak.
Senior officials and medical experts of the hospital, including CEO B.K. Subodh Singh, Dr. Salil Kumar Parida, Dr. Ananta Kumar Agasti, Dr. Bijay Mishra and Dr. Malay Kumar Dhal, were present and addressed participants on the importance of liver care and organ donation.
In the marathon, Shubham Behera (20) from Nayagarh secured first place, followed by Roshan Majhi (19) from Kalahandi in second, and Dolamani Chirgun (18) in third. The winners were felicitated by the Chief Guest, who commended the hospital’s initiative and emphasised the need for sustained public awareness on health issues.
In a significant breakthrough for healthcare in the state, Utkal Hospital successfully performed three cadaveric liver transplants in March 2026, setting a new benchmark in Odisha’s medical landscape. The achievement highlights the growing awareness and acceptance of organ donation among people in the state.
The transplant procedures were led by noted liver transplant surgeon Dr. Salil Kumar Parida (MS, MCh), supported by a specialised multidisciplinary team. The team included Dr. Malay Ranjan Dhal (Gastro Surgeon), Dr. Mayur and Dr. Jasmin (Transplant Anaesthesia), and critical care specialists Dr. Sushant Kumar Nayak and Dr. Bhakti. Their coordinated clinical expertise and use of advanced technology ensured the success of these complex surgeries.
The hospital expressed deep gratitude to the donor families who, despite personal loss, chose to donate organs and give new life to others. Their contribution has brought renewed hope to multiple families.
Acknowledging institutional support, the hospital also credited the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization and the Government of Odisha for their crucial role in facilitating seamless coordination during the transplant process.
With this achievement, Utkal Hospital has further strengthened its position as a leading centre for liver transplantation in Odisha. The institution reiterated its commitment to advancing organ donation awareness and delivering high-quality healthcare services.
Doctors also highlighted that organ donation is one of the noblest acts, as a single donor has the potential to save multiple lives—transforming grief into hope and restoring joy to many families. Citizens were encouraged to come forward and support this life-saving cause.
