Utkal Hospital Achieves Milestone with First Cadaveric Kidney Transplant

Bhubaneswar, Dec. 4: Utkal Hospital, a leading super multi-specialty healthcare provider in Odisha, has achieved a historic breakthrough by successfully performing its first cadaveric kidney transplant, setting a new benchmark in the state’s medical care.
The patient, a 36-year-old woman battling end-stage kidney disease, had been undergoing regular dialysis before her condition was assessed as critical by senior consultant nephrologist Dr. Lalata Barun Patra. A kidney transplant was recommended, but the patient’s family members were unable to donate due to medical incompatibility.
A turning point came when a donor kidney, pre-registered in another Bhubaneswar hospital, became available. In a remarkable display of coordination, a green corridor was established with the assistance of the police department, ensuring the organ’s timely transportation to Utkal Hospital.
The complex 10-hour surgery was carried out by a team of highly skilled doctors, including Dr. Kali Prasad Mishra, Dr. Lalata Barun Patra, Dr. Pabitra Kumar Mishra, anesthetist Dr. R. B. Raju, and Dr. Jita Mishra Mitra, supported by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals. The procedure was a resounding success, with the patient discharged after 14 days of intensive post-operative care. She is now recovering at home under close observation for the next 45 days, hospital officials confirmed.
Dr. Aditya Samal, Chairman of Utkal Hospital, extended his heartfelt gratitude to the donor’s family and the police for their pivotal roles in this life-saving initiative. He emphasized the importance of organ donation in offering new hope to critically ill patients.
