BY SUDHARAM SARAP

Bhawanipatna, April 25: The State-Level World Malaria Day was observed on Friday at the Town Hall in Bhawanipatna, Odisha, with an emphasis on raising awareness about the prevention of vector-borne diseases, particularly malaria. The event was organised by the Health and Family Welfare Department to spread the message of safeguarding communities from malaria through timely preventive measures.

Addressing the gathering virtually, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling urged public authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in creating awareness about the prevention of communicable diseases. He highlighted the importance of grassroots engagement in containing the spread of malaria, especially in vulnerable regions.

To effectively convey the message, a short play titled “Uansara Atira Janha” was staged during the programme, drawing attention to the symptoms, causes, and preventive measures of malaria. The event was presided over by Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, Director of the Health and Family Welfare Department, who reiterated the need for sustained community-level interventions.

It is worth noting that districts like Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Boudh are particularly prone to malaria outbreaks. Acknowledging this, Minister Dr. Mahaling had previously addressed concerns regarding malaria prevention efforts in these areas.

Medical experts and field personnel stressed in their speeches the importance of early intervention and community participation in controlling the spread of vector-borne diseases. The programme saw enthusiastic participation from political leaders, civil society organisations, health professionals, and the general public. Notable attendees included Zilla Parishad President Pushpendra Singh Deo and Collector Pawar Sachin Prakash.

The observance of World Malaria Day at the state level not only raised awareness but also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to malaria elimination efforts in Odisha.
