Malkangiri, Feb. 2: In a tragic incident, two girls on Thursday drowned to death as they fell into a water-filled pit at Dhepasahi in Odisha’s Malkangiri district.

The deceased were identified as Subhadra Kamar (4) and Sumi Janam.

According to reports, the pit was earlier used by a contractor for storing water during road construction in the locality. While playing near the pit, the two girls fell into it, at around 12 noon.

Though villagers rescued the two in a critical condition and rushed them to a hospital, they were declared dead by doctors.

A pall of gloom descended on the village after the death of the two girls.

The locals demanded strong action against the contractor for leaving the pit open.

“The authorities must fix the accountability on the contractor who left the pit open. He should have closed it by filling earth. For the reckless act of the contractor, we lost two precious lives,” said Bhaskar Behera, a resident of Malkangiri.
