Bhubaneswar : In a bizarre incident, the family members of a girl hailing from Chandiput village under Mohana block in Odisha’s Gajapati district on Tuesday performed her post-death rituals on Tuesday for marrying a person against their will.
As per reports, Chandini Sahoo, daughter of Sahadev Sahoo, eloped from her home 11 days ago. The family members searched for Chandini at many places, but in vain. However, they came to know from viral photos on the next day that Chandini had got married to a boy from their village who belongs to another caste.
Irate over the development, the family members felt insulted and declared Chandini publicly dead. Later on the 11th day of the marriage on Tuesday, they called their friends and relatives and performed the post-death rituals of the girl.
Moreover, they have also filed a missing report at the police station.
“We faced a lot of hardship to raise our daughter and provide her proper education. Her marriage was fixed and her engagement was on September 12. However, she married a person outside our caste against the will of the family members. It’s an insult to us and our caste. For us, she has died. We have performed her last rites,” said Chandini’s father Sahadev Sahoo.
“If they love each other, it’s good that they have got married. Let them live happily. I don’t want to say anything on the matter,” said Jeet Nayak, elder brother of Chandini’s husband.
A couple of days earlier, in a similar incident, angry parents of a girl in Kendrapara district had performed the last rites of their daughter for marrying someone she was in love with.
