Bhubaneswar, March 17: Odisha’s paddy procurement drive has seen significant progress, with the state successfully collecting 71.50 lakh metric tonnes of kharif paddy so far. Aiming for a target of 76 lakh metric tonnes, the government is confident about achieving the goal before the March 31 deadline, according to Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra.

The minister also confirmed that preparations for the Rabi season procurement are well underway, with farmer registrations set to commence shortly after securing the Chief Minister’s approval. The state government had earlier announced that this year’s procurement process would officially conclude on March 31.

To maintain transparency and efficiency, the government has implemented strict measures against misconduct. In February, two officials were suspended for alleged irregularities and negligence at a procurement center (Mandi) in Machhagaon, under the Balikuda block of Jagatsinghpur district.

To enhance operations and address disruptions promptly, a 24/7 control room has been set up to monitor procurement center activities across the state. A toll-free helpline, 1967, is also available, enabling farmers to report grievances and seek quick resolutions regarding market operations.

In October 2024, the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, approved the civil supplies department’s proposal to procure 54 lakh tonnes of rice (equivalent to 80 lakh tonnes of paddy) for the ongoing Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2024–25. The original target comprised 66 lakh tonnes of kharif paddy and 14 lakh tonnes for the Rabi season.

However, the Group of Ministers, led by Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, revised the target to 77 lakh tonnes despite crop damage caused by unseasonal rains in several coastal districts in December 2024. While paddy procurement has nearly concluded in many western Odisha districts, it remains in full swing in coastal areas where the process started later.

According to department sources, procurement has exceeded targets in most districts affected by the unseasonal rains. Although the rush at mandis has slowed down, if the current pace continues until the final date of March 31, the state is expected to surpass the target.

“Odisha’s consistent focus on strengthening the paddy procurement system reflects the state’s commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring a seamless and transparent process,” said Civil Supplies Minister Patra.
