Bhubaneswar, May 22: In a significant boost to Odisha’s industrial landscape, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Ltd’s (IMFA) upcoming state-of-the-art ferro chrome plant at the Kalinga Nagar Industrial Complex in Jajpur district.
The ceremony was attended by key state dignitaries, including minister of state (independent charge) for Industries Sampad Chandra Swain, minister of state (independent charge) for co-operation Pradeep Bal Samanta, Jajpur Lok Sabha member Rabindra Narayan Behera; MLAs Shri Akash Das Nayak and Shri Amar Nayak and senior leadership from IMFA.
Spread across 124.26 acres, the new facility will have an annual production capacity of 100,000 metric tonnes of ferro chrome. The Rs 800-crore project, slated for commissioning in Phase 1 by Q1 FY 2026-27, will feature advanced manufacturing technology, further strengthening IMFA’s integrated operations in Odisha.
Once operational, the plant will increase the company’s total ferrochrome capacity to 384,000 tonnes per annum, consolidating its position as India’s largest producer of value-added ferro chrome, a critical material in stainless steel production.
“This project is a testament to our unwavering commitment to Odisha’s economic growth and sustainable industrialization. The new plant will not only enhance the state’s industrial standing but also set new benchmarks in operational efficiency and environmental responsibility,” said Subhrakant Panda, managing director, IMFA.
In a significant step towards decarbonising its operations, IMFA has also partnered with JSW Green Energy to secure 110 MW of hybrid renewable power for the Kalinga Nagar unit. The collaboration marks a strategic shift towards green manufacturing, aligning with India’s broader net-zero ambitions by 2070.
Industry watchers see the project as a timely intervention, as India’s stainless steel and ferro alloys sector gears up for rising domestic and export demand, driven by infrastructure, automotive, and defence sectors.
