Barbil, June 9: Marking World Environment Day 2026, JSW Steel’s Odisha Mining Division organized a 6-km Environment Marathon, titled Enviro-Thon, at Barbil on June 7. The event was aimed at fostering environmental responsibility while encouraging fitness and community engagement.

The marathon witnessed an enthusiastic response, attracting nearly 800 participants, including JSW Steel employees and members of the local community, making it one of the largest environmental awareness initiatives in the region.

The event was graced by Shri Ramesh Chandra Nayak, Executive Officer of Barbil Municipality, as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, he urged participants to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives and contribute towards a greener future.

In the men’s category, Dodro Hembrom secured first place, completing the race in 21.43 minutes. Ashish Hesha finished second with a time of 21.46 minutes, while Sunil Behra claimed third place at 21.49 minutes.

Among women participants, Rina Topno emerged as the winner, clocking 30.38 minutes. Saina Kalo secured second place with a timing of 30.43 minutes, followed by Kajal Sitari in third place at 32.07 minutes.

The children’s category also saw impressive performances, with Prince Sidu taking first place, Ayush Sinku finishing second, and Gyhana Ranjan Mahanta securing third position.

Sharing his experience, Dodro Hembrom said that while crossing the finish line was exhilarating, receiving a plant as a prize made the achievement even more meaningful, symbolizing the event’s commitment to both health and environmental conservation.

Rina Topno noted that winning a medal was exciting, but being part of an initiative promoting eco-friendly choices and encouraging people to say no to plastic was the true reward.

All participants received World Environment Day-themed T-shirts, while every finisher was presented with a potted plant and a jute bag carrying the message, “Say No to Plastic.” Medals were awarded to the top three finishers in the men’s, women’s, and children’s categories in recognition of their outstanding performances.

The Enviro-Thon reflected JSW Steel’s continued commitment to balancing industrial growth with environmental stewardship and community well-being.
