JSPL commissions Odisha’s biggest steel mill, Rs 33,000 crore invested in the project

ANGUL, MAY 27: The biggest 6-million-tonne per annum steel plant of Odisha built by Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL) was commissioned here on Saturday.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the project in the presence of Srimati Savitri Jindal, Chairperson Emeritus, OP Jindal Group and Mr Naveen Jindal, Chairman, JSPL

Inaugurating the state-of-the art steel mill, Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik said it would provide direct employment to around 30,000 people and indirect jobs to many others.

JSPL chairman Naveen Jindal said the plant was set up at an investment of about Rs 33,000 crore and it would enable the company to overcome its loss in the aftermath of the coal block cancellation.

He said Jindal Steel & Power Limited would start earning and play significant role in the development of the state.

The plant with its 4,554 cubic meter blast furnace will make Odisha the fourth largest steel maker in the country.

“With this, JSPL also becomes the first company to complete this mega steel project as per its commitment in the memorandum of understanding with the government of Odisha,” said Mr Jindal.

The company had installed two mtpa steel making capacity at its Angul steel complex in 2015 with Coal Gasification – DRI route, which is being used for the first time in the world.

Later it further added four mtpa steel making capacity.

The Angul steel complex has also four mtpa sinter plant, two mtpa coke oven, three mtpa steel melting shop, 1.2 mtpa plate mill, 1.4 mtpa bar mill and a 810 mw captive power plant.

In 2005, JSPL signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Odisha government to build the mega steel plant. JSPL’s overall capacity of steel production has been enhanced to 10.75 mtpa, company sources said.

Among others, Mr. Prafulla Samal, Hon’ble Minister (Steel & Mines); Dr. Nrusingha Charan Sahu; Hon’ble Minister of State (Commerce & Transport); Mr. Mahesh Sahoo, MLA; Mr. Rajani Kant Singh, MLA; Mr. Sanjeeb Kumar Sahoo, MLA; Mr. Braja Kishore Pradhan, MLA;  Mr. Sushant Kumar Behera, MLA; Mr. Anil Kumar Samal, Collector & District Magistrate and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Mr. Ravi Uppal, MD & Group CEO of JSPL in his address said, “JSPL will continue to do its best to join the efforts of the Government in harnessing industry led socio-economic development”.

The Angul steel complex has been established with State of the Art World Class Technology. The Company has installed 2 MTPA steelmaking capacity with Coal Gasification – DRI route at its Angul Steel Complex in 2014. The CGP-DRI is being used for the first time in the world and uses domestic coal. In order to achieve the 6 MTPA Steel Making capacity, the company has built 4554 cubic meter blast furnance, which is largest in India. The steel complex also has a 4 MTPA Sinter Plant, a 2 MTPA Coke Oven, a 3 MTPA Steel Melting Shop, a 1.2 MTPA Plate Mill that produces plates of 5 meter wide – the widest in India, a 1.4 MTPA Bar Mill, a 1.8 MTPA DRI Plant producing steel  and a 810 MW Captive Power Plant.

The Blast Furnace project, started in Year 2014, has been completed in a record time. JSPL is the first among the mega steel industries who signed MoU with the State Government to install the capacity as per MoU. With this 6 MTPA Steel Plant, JSPL achieves 10.75 MTPA steel making capacity.

The Company is also always in forefront of various socio-economic development activities for the local communities under its comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

th2017: Mr. Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Odisha today dedicated 6 MTPA Integrated Steel Plant of Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL) at Angul in presence of Smt. Savitri Jindal, Chairperson Emeritus, OP Jindal Group and Mr. Naveen Jindal, Chairman, JSPL. With this mega steel complex, JSPL builds the largest steel plant of Odisha with investment of Rs. 33,000 Crore.

Congratulating JSPL & Mr. Naveen Jindal, Chief Minister Mr. Patnaik said, “More than 20% of India’s Steel is produced in Odisha. I am extremely pleased to note that this project of JSPL has the potential of providing direct employment to 30,000 people and indirect employment to more than one lakh people”. He complemented Mr. Jindal for the excellent housekeeping in the steel complex.

While expressing his gratitude people of Odisha for their contribution in building this 6 MTPA Steel Plant at Angul, Mr. Jindal thanked the State Government for its policy initiatives to encourage value addition industries in the State. “Under the able leadership of Mr. Naveen Patnaik, Odisha has got long political stability which has helped the state to take leap forwarding several socio-economic development frontiers. With commissioning of the Blast Furnace JSPL will gradually overcome the difficulties and will emerge as one of the most vibrant steel making units in the globe”.
