IPL 2023: After BCCI president stint, Sourav Ganguly to rejoin Delhi Capitals as Director of Cricket

New Delhi, jan 3 : Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is all set to rejoin Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals as its Head of Cricket (Director). This will be Ganguly’s first assignment related to professional cricket after he completed his stint as the president of the Indian cricket board (BCCI).

Ganguly had served as an advisor for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2019 season and worked closely with coach Ricky Ponting. He had to quit the role after he was elected as the BCCI president in October 2019.

He will also oversee all the cricket verticals of the franchise along with the ILT20 team Dubai Capitals and the SA T230 league side Pretoria Capitals, according to news agency PTI.

Ganguly’s stint as BCCI president came to an end after former World Cup-winning all-rounder Roger Binny was unanimously elected as the president in October 2022.

Ganguly formed a fine working relationship with Delhi Capitals management and players. The former India captain was a constant presence in the dug-out and a photo of him lifting Rishabh Pant after a win in IPL 2019 was shared widely on social media. Ganguly has also spoken fondly of his association with the former finalists.

After his stint as BCCI president came to an end, Ganguly had said he would go on to do bigger things in life, saying nothing is permanent. Ganguly had reportedly expressed desire to continue as the board president after attending meetings with the BCCI top brass ahead of the nominations.

“These were great moments, whatever you do in life, I keep telling everyone, the best days were when you played for your country. I have seen so much after that, I have been president of the CAB, I have been president of the BCCI, and I will go on to do bigger things in the future, but those 15 years will be the best days of my life,” Ganguly had said.

Ganguly was even offered the role of IPL chairman but Ganguly did not take it up, adding he wouldn’t want to lead a sub-committee of the board after heading the world’s richest body over the last 3 years.
