India records 6,155 new Covid cases, daily positivity rate crosses 5%

NEW DELHI,APR 8: India on Saturday recorded 6,155 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of active cases to 31,194. The daily positivity rate crossed five percent on a national average and stood at 5.63 percent. The weekly positivity rate stood at 3.47 per cent, said the health ministry.

According to the health ministry data, India reported 9 fatalities due to the virus. The total death count stands at 5,30,954. The number of discharged people stood at 4,41,89,111 as per data shared by the ministry on Saturday.

A total of 1,963 doses of vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours. As of now, a total of 220.66 crore vaccines have been inoculated since the nationwide vaccination drive began on January 16, 2021.

With Covid cases rising everyday, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a high-level meeting on Friday with health ministers of states and Union Territories to review the public health preparedness. He ordered states to identify emergency hotspots, ramp up testing, and ensure hospital infrastructure readiness.

He also directed health officials to follow a five-fold strategy of test, track, treat, vaccinate and adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour for Covid management.
