Balangir, May 28: In a series of successful night patrolling operations, forest officials in Balangir district seized illegally harvested timber and firewood from different locations, highlighting the persistent challenge of illegal logging in the region.
On the night of May 27, staff from the Titilagarh and Saintala Ranges intercepted a tractor loaded with illegally felled timber in the Barnei Reserve Forest. The operation, conducted as part of routine monitoring for elephant movements, underscores the dual responsibilities of wildlife conservation and curbing forest offences. Two individuals were arrested on the spot, and further investigation is currently underway.
In a separate incident on the same night, at around 11:25 PM, the Loisingha Range staff seized a Bolero pickup vehicle laden with approximately five quintals of Khair firewood near Bharasuja village. The seized vehicle and firewood were brought to the Loisingha Range office campus for safekeeping, and a case has been registered. Further inquiries are being conducted to trace the source and network behind the illegal activity.
Forest department officials stated that intensified patrolling and coordinated vigilance drives will continue in the coming days to curb illegal timber trade and protect the region’s forest resources.
