Hyderabad woman left with no money in bank after her 16-year-old son spent Rs 36 lakh on mobile gaming

By Odisha News Online Jun 10, 2023 341

Hyderabad ,June 10 : It seems that parents haven’t still learned the lesson as reports of children spending a vast amount of money from their bank account are again emerging online. A 13-year-old girl in China emptied her mother’s bank account by spending Rs 52 lakh on a mobile game. Now, another minor from India has done something similar just for playing online games.

A 16-year-old boy, who was a resident of Amberpet area in Hyderabad, emptied the bank account of his mother for a game. The woman lost about a whopping Rs 36 lakh because her son wanted to continue playing online games on the mobile phone.

According to details provided by the cyber crime wing of Hyderabad police, the boy first downloaded the popular Free Fire gaming app on his grandfather’s mobile phone. This is a free game, but the boy started spending some amount on it as he advanced in the game. He first spent Rs 1,500 from his mother’s account and later Rs 10,000 to play the game.

With time, he got addicted to the game because money gave made the gameplay better with improvement in skills and weapons. This addiction led him to spend a huge amount of money without the knowledge of family members, according to a report from IANS.

He kept making payments of Rs 1.45 lakh to Rs 2 lakh in the Free Fire game. Later, when the boy’s mother visited the State Bank of India (SBI) to withdraw some money, she was taken aback by the fact that no money was left in her bank account. The bank officials told her that a whopping Rs 27 lakh was spent from her account and this is not the only bank account. She learned that her son has spent money using her HDFC bank too. The boy had taken out Rs 9 lakh from this bank account. Hence, the total money that she lost is Rs 36 lakh.

The woman then reported the issue to the cyber crime police station. The boy was a student of class 11th, and son of a deceased police official. She told a police officer that it was her late husband’s hard-earned money that she lost just because of a game and the money was also a part of the monetary benefit that she received following the officer’s death.

The addiction to gaming and minors spending a lot of money from their parent’s bank accounts pushed the Indian government to ban many popular games like BGMI. Though, there were reasons too behind the ban.
