Delhi’s new mayor Shelly Oberoi was an assistant professor at DU, won awards

Delhi,Feb 22:  Aam Aadmi Party’s Shelly Oberoi was on Wednesday elected the mayor of Delhi. She was elected to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) from Patel Nagar’s Ward Number 86.

Shelly Oberoi, 39, was a visiting Assistant Professor at Delhi University. She is also a lifetime member of the Indian Commerce Association. She has pursued her Doctorate in Philosophy from the School of Management Studies (SOMS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

She is also the recipient of best paper awards in different national and international conferences and has won a Gold medal (Prof Manubhai Shah Award) at ICA Conference. She completed her BCom from Janki Devi Memorial College of Delhi University.

The Delhi mayor election had been hanging fire and three attempts to elect the mayor had failed.

Shelly Oberoi joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2013 and was the vice-president of its women’s wing till 2020.

She defeated Deepali Kumari by 269 votes in the high-stakes MCD election and has now defeated Rekha Gupta to become Delhi mayor.

As per provisions, the MCD has to elect five mayors in five years, starting with a woman. In the third year, an elected councillor from the Scheduled Caste will get the post.

In a significant win for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Supreme Court had on February 17 ordered that aldermen, who are members nominated by the lieutenant governor, would not be allowed to cast votes in Delhi mayoral elections.

AAP had previously alleged that the nominated members were former associates of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which could lead to unfair Delhi mayoral polls.
