Congress Prez poll: Been waiting a long time for this, says Sonia Gandhi

NEW DELHI,OCT 17 :Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi on Monday spoke to media after casting her vote for the party’s presidential election and said, “I have been waiting for a long time for this.” The election marks a historic day for Congress as a non-Gandhi chief will be elected after more than 24 years.

Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra casted their votes at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi.

The election will decide the party chief between Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor. Over 9,000 Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates will cast their votes across the country through a secret ballot.

The Congress presidential election is taking place for the sixth time in the party’s 137-year history. The last contest for the top post was in 2000, when Jitendra Prasada suffered an embarrassing defeat opposite Sonia Gandhi.
