centenarian freedom fighter Nilamani Samal consigned to flame with state honour

Jajpur, Jan 29: Mortal remains of freedom fighter Nilamani Samal were consigned to flames with full state honour at Balipadia village in Jajpur district on Sunday.

Thousands of prominent personailities and sympathizers along with district administrators reached the graveyard here to pay homage to the departed soul.

Samal passed away on Saturday at 102 at SCB Hospital and Medical College for his geriatric related ailments.

He was the President of All Odisha Freedom Fighters’ Forum for decades. Samal, a resident of the Balipadia village in the Jajpur district, had joined the Indian freedom movement at his early childhood.

 He was put behind the bars very often for his indomitable involvement in the war of independence. Samal was conferred the President’s Award for four times, for his valiant contribution to the freedom struggle of India.

Writer Engnieer Taraprasad Mishra Said Nilamani Samal was arrested during the Quit India movement by the British and spent three years in jail. He walked 10 km with Mahatma Gandhi to eradicate untouchability.
