Sonepur, June 28: The agitation against Panimora Ethanol Factory continues, with the factory’s management being accused of ignoring the concerns of the Panimora villagers under Tarabha block in Odisha’s Sonepur district. The factory ,owned by Delhi-based industrialist Anil Kanodia, has been emitting foul odor and noise pollution, causing distress to the villagers. The villagers have been demanding proper waste management, reduction of noise pollution, employment opportunities, and compensation for the affected people.
After a recent blockade of the factory, the administration intervened, and the factory authorities agreed to fulfill the demands within 5 days. However, the villagers warned that if the demands are not met, the agitation will intensify.
The factory has been in operation since for years now, despite allegations of irregularities and non-compliance with environmental norms. The villagers have accused the factory management of violating promises made during its establishment, including providing employment opportunities to local youth.
The factory’s operations have affected the health and livelihood of the villagers, with many complaining of skin diseases and respiratory problems due to the polluted water and air. The villagers have also alleged that the factory management has been using unauthorized chemicals and exploiting local resources.
The factory’s management has been elusive, with Anil Kanodia reportedly staying in Delhi and rarely visiting the site. The villagers have accused the administration and local politicians of being in the factory’s pocket, allowing it to operate with impunity.
The situation highlights the need for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations and greater accountability from industrial units. The villagers’ demands for justice and compensation will likely continue to be a contentious issue in the region.
