Bhubaneswar, Feb. 24: In a significant move to strengthen security and curb crime, advanced artificial intelligence (AI) cameras will soon be installed in Odisha’s twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. This initiative, announced by Twin City Police Commissioner Dr S Dev Datta Singh on Monday, aims to enhance public safety by leveraging cutting-edge technology to monitor criminal activities and traffic violations.

Commissioner Singh emphasised that the AI-enabled cameras would play a crucial role in maintaining law and order in these rapidly urbanising urban centers. “The integration of AI technology will not only help identify traffic violators but also detect criminal activities more efficiently,” he stated, underlining the importance of such innovations for public safety.

Along with deploying AI cameras, the authorities plan to expand closed-circuit television (CCTV) coverage and bolster the security force. These measures aim to ensure comprehensive surveillance, enhancing public safety and boosting residents’ confidence in local law enforcement.

Currently, Bhubaneswar, designated as a smart city, has about 1,000 CCTV cameras at key junctions. However, these are deemed insufficient due to the growing population and increasing security needs.

“The new AI-enabled cameras will be equipped with facial recognition technology, allowing for precise identification of offenders,” Commissioner Singh explained. “This advanced system will significantly improve the efficiency of law enforcement and security operations by the Commissionerate Police.”

According to sources, the locations for installing these AI cameras were selected through a detailed survey conducted by local police stations. The process involved analyzing high-risk zones, traffic flow, and suggestions from civil society groups.

Reflecting on past challenges, the Commissioner noted that several criminal cases, including burglaries, underscored the need for more extensive CCTV coverage. He also highlighted the importance of public cooperation in enhancing surveillance, stating, “We had previously requested apartment societies to install CCTV cameras. While many have complied, some systems are not functioning properly. It is crucial that these security mechanisms are regularly maintained.”

“With these technological advancements, the Commissionerate Police aims to create a safer urban environment, ensuring better crime prevention and traffic management in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack,” s senior police official said.
