Bhubaneswar: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) claims to have made significant gains ahead of the student union elections in Odisha, with its candidates elected unopposed to 252 posts across 60 colleges in the state.

The victories include 12 President, 17 General Secretary, 22 Vice-President and 23 Joint Secretary posts. Following the withdrawal deadline, no rival candidates remained in the fray for these positions. In several colleges, Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Biju Janata Dal-affiliated Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) failed to field candidates.

ABVP registered notable successes at Berhampur University, winning the posts of President, Drama Secretary and Cultural Secretary. It also secured all major posts at Talcher Autonomous College, Dharmasala Degree College, Mahima Degree College at Joranda in Dhenkanal, Chikiti Degree College, People’s Degree College at Buguda and Khajuricata Degree College in Hindol.

ABVP leaders attributed the victories to the organisation’s year-round engagement with students and sustained efforts to address campus-related issues.

ABVP National Secretary Shravan B. Raj said the organisation’s contest in Odisha was against the political approach of the Congress and the BJD, which, he alleged, prioritised political calculations over students’ interests.

He said the failure of NSUI and BCJD to field candidates in several colleges showed that political backing alone was insufficient to succeed in student politics. ABVP workers, he added, remained active on campuses throughout the year, raising students’ concerns and working to resolve their problems.

ABVP Odisha East State Secretary Deeptimayee Pratihari said the unopposed victories reflected the hard work of the organisation’s workers and the confidence students placed in them.

She expressed confidence that ABVP would perform strongly in the upcoming student union elections, adding that the organisation would continue to raise issues related to student welfare and safeguard students’ rights.

ABVP also cited its electoral successes in Delhi, Punjab, Kerala and Assam as evidence of its growing acceptance among students nationwide.
