Expansion of Odisha govt-operated Kodingamali bauxite mine boosts regional development

Bhubaneswar, May 9: The Kodingamali bauxite mine, operated by the state-run Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), has emerged as a key driver of industrial and socio-economic development in southern Odisha over the past eight years. Spread across the districts of Koraput and Rayagada, the mine supplies bauxite to industries within the state, playing a crucial role in strengthening Odisha’s mineral-based economy.
Currently operating at a production capacity of 3.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the mine is now being expanded to 6.0 MTPA to meet rising industrial demand and further accelerate the state’s resource-driven growth.
Despite opposition from a small group allegedly influenced by competing industrial interests, the proposed expansion has received overwhelming support from local communities. More than 10,000 residents from villages surrounding the mining area have reportedly submitted formal representations backing the project, citing the wide-ranging developmental benefits it has brought to the region.
Residents say the mining project has significantly improved access to education, healthcare, livelihood opportunities, drinking water supply and road connectivity in previously underdeveloped areas. The project has also created direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing to improved living standards in the tribal-dominated region.
OMC officials reiterated the corporation’s commitment to sustainable and responsible mining practices, while ensuring community welfare and environmental protection. The company stated that the expansion project would be implemented in compliance with all regulatory and environmental safeguards, with a focus on inclusive growth and long-term regional development.
The expansion of the Kodingamali mine is expected to further strengthen Odisha’s position as one of India’s leading mineral-producing states, while simultaneously boosting economic activity and infrastructure development in the region.
