Bhubaneswar, Oct. 18: Aditya Aluminium, a unit of Hindalco Industries Limited at Sambalpur, has achieved a significant sustainability milestone with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art 200 KLD Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Plant featuring advanced Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) technology. The facility ensures complete recycling and reuse of industrial effluents, marking a major stride toward sustainable water management and environmental stewardship.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Smt. Uma Nanduri, PCCF (Kendu Leaves), Odisha & Member Secretary, OSPCB; Mr. Sudarsan Behera, Conservator of Forests, Sambalpur Kendu Leaf Circle; Dr. S. N. Nanda, Regional Officer, SPCB; and Er. Hiranya Kumar Nayak, Regional Officer, Jharsuguda. Senior officials from the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) and the Aditya Aluminium management team, including Mr. J. P. Nayak (Unit Head), Mr. Gulshan Tiwari (Head – CPP), Mr. Sandeep Singh (Head – Smelter), Mr. Vinoda Thakur (Head – HR), Mr. Ranjan Jena (Cluster Environment Head), and Mr. Lalit Charan (DH – Environment), were also present on the occasion.

The MVR-based ZLD system operates by evaporating and condensing wastewater through recycled steam energy, enabling the recovery of 90–95 per cent clean water for reuse within the plant. This cutting-edge technology completely eliminates liquid effluent discharge, significantly reduces freshwater consumption, and ensures full compliance with stringent ZLD norms.

With an investment of approximately Rs 20 crore, the project reflects Hindalco’s strategic emphasis on sustainability, resource efficiency, and circular economy principles. It also aligns with the company’s long-term vision of achieving Water Positivity across its operations.

This pioneering initiative positions Aditya Aluminium among Odisha’s first modular MVR-based ZLD facilities, setting new benchmarks for responsible industrial practices in the aluminium sector and reaffirming Hindalco’s unwavering commitment to environmental excellence and future-ready operations.
