Bhubaneswar, Jan. 8: The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) officially began on Wednesday at Janata Maidan in Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar inaugurated the event, which celebrates the contributions of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to India’s development.
In his keynote address, CM Majhi underscored Odisha’s potential as a hub for investments. He emphasized the state’s rich resources, skilled workforce, and robust infrastructure as key advantages.
“Odisha is a land of immense possibilities. With its natural wealth, vibrant culture, and untapped opportunities, I invite our Indian diaspora to actively participate in shaping its future,” said Majhi.
Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the remarkable role of the Indian diaspora in the country’s transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He praised the 30-million-strong diaspora for their achievements and urged them to contribute further to India’s growth.
“Our youth abroad have made India proud. Their energy and innovation are vital to making India a leading global power,” he remarked.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, also addressed the audience, focusing on the youth’s contributions to science, technology, and healthcare. He encouraged young professionals in the diaspora to continue collaborating with India.
The three-day event, which will include an address by Prime Minister Modi on Thursday and a valedictory speech by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday, has drawn policymakers, business leaders, and diaspora representatives.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, initiated in 2003 by the Ministry of External Affairs, commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India on January 9, 1915, marking a turning point in India’s freedom struggle. This year’s event features seminars and cultural performances focused on heritage, innovation, and global partnerships. Topics include investment potential, cultural exchanges, and advancements in digital technology.
The opening session also featured insights from Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs; Dr. Dev Pragad, CEO of Newsweek USA; and Ms. Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports.
As a celebration of India’s global ties, PBD 2025 reinforces the critical role of the Indian diaspora in fostering socio-economic growth and strengthening India’s global influence.
