‘Shameful’: Rajya Sabha Chairman on MP mimicking him, Rahul Gandhi filming it

NEW DELHI, DEC 19 : Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday slammed Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee for mimicking him outside Parliament. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi filmed the mimicry as opposition MPs, who have been protesting outside Parliament against the mass suspension of opposition MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, burst into laughter.

“Shameful, ridiculous, unacceptable that an MP is mocking, and a second MP is videographing that incident,” Dhankhar said.

The Trinamool Congress MP mimicked Dhankhar in an impromptu skit, depicting the proceedings of Parliament that has been marred by multiple adjournments in the past few days. The Opposition has demanded an official statement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the December 13 Parliament security breach.

Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also condemned the incident, calling for the suspension of Kalyan Banerjee. “Disregard of house and authority of the chair, the member (MP) should be suspended,” he said.

Israel-Hamas WarUnion Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju also lashed out at Kalyan Banerjee and Rahul Gandhi over the incident. “MP is mocking Hon’ble Vice President of our Country, while Rahul Gandhi is cheering and filming the contemptible act,” he wrote on X.

In a follow-up post on the micro-blogging site, the former Law Minister said that the INDIA bloc MPs never care for “Parliament business nor are bothered about people’s issues.

“As Parliament begins they would charge towards the Chair, shouting slogans with placards, using unparliamentary words! They don’t believe in debate but only disruptions,” Rijiju’s post added.

The opposition MPs have been protesting outside the Parliament building since yesterday, following the suspension of 92 MPs of various opposition parties. Another 49 MPs have now been suspended, taking the suspended figure to a record 141.

Addressing the mass suspension, the BJP took to X and explained as to why it had happened.

“If the country was wondering why Opposition MPs were suspended, here is the reason… TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee mocked the Honourable Vice President, while Rahul Gandhi lustily cheered him on. One can imagine how reckless and violative they have been of the House,” the BJP posted on the micro-blogging site along with a video of the mimicry.

The Congress also took a dig at the BJP-Centre by posting an image on X. “It is forbidden to ask questions,” the caption read.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also slammed the Centre, writing on X, “The new Parliament reflects Namocracy in all its tyranny.”
