Later, the suspect in the mass shooting incident was identified as Robert Card, a firearms instructor in the US Army Reserve who was recently discharged from a mental health facility after reporting hallucinations.

Soon after the incident, the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston issued a statement saying it was “reacting to a mass casualty, mass shooter event” and coordinating with area hospitals to take patients.

Emergency personnel were called to separate shootings at a bowling alley, a restaurant and a Walmart distribution center, the Sun Journal reported.

According to the Associated Press, Maine State Police ordered residents in the state’s second-largest city to shelter in place Wednesday night, after they received information of an active shooter situation in multiple locations.

“Please stay off the roads to allow emergency responders access to the hospitals,” police said.

Lewiston is part of Androscoggin County and about 35 miles (56 km) north of Maine’s largest city, Portland.
