Patient jumps from 8th floor of Kolkata hospital
KOLKATA,JUNE 25 : A patient, reportedly mentally unstable, jumped from the eighth floor of the Institute of NeuroScience Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday.
The patient somehow climbed out of an eighth floor window of a hospital and sat on the edge of a cornice on the eighth floor of the building where he was undergoing treatment.
The fire brigade, police and hospital authorities were pressed into the service and they frantically tried to bring him down. But the man did not allow them to approach him.
The patient, identified as Sudhir Adhikari, has been admitted for medical treatment and his condition is extremely critical.
A hydraulic ladder was brought to bring him down but everytime the ladder tried to get near him, he tried to jump.
“He fell off at around 1:10 pm and hit the cornice of the floors below at least twice before landing on the ground,” the official told PTI.
He was ‘very very critically injured’ and his skull, rib cage and left hand were badly damaged, a hospital official said.
People gathered outside the hospital to have a glimpse of the man and many urged him to move from the spot.
“He wasn’t saying anything as to why he was sitting there, but was not allowing people in uniform to approach him. We had placed several mattresses, net. His treatment is ongoing,” Fire officer, Shubhankar Ghosh, was quoted by ANI as saying.
Adhikari’s family had earlier tried to reason with him and broke down on seeing him fall.
The hospital closed its main entrance after the incident.
