Young girl beaten up in public view for trying to meet boyfriend, police takes suo moto cognizance

Bhubaneswar, Feb. 8: In a shocking incident, a young girl was reportedly tied a pillar of a house and brutally thrashed by her own family members and relatives for allegedly going to meet her male friend.

The shocking incident was reported from Leprosy Colony under Mancheswar police station in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar.

According to sources, the incident occurred Monday evening. On being alerted, the Mancheswar police rushed to the spot and rescued the young girl.

On Wednesday, the Mancheswar police took suo moto cognizance of the matter and launched a probe into the incident on Wednesday.

A police team visited the colony and questioned a few people. Although the girl hasn’t lodged any complaint in this regard, Mancheswar police have registered a case and launched a probe in this connection.

Sources said the girl had gone to Leprosy Colony to meet her rumoured boyfriend. However, her family members and relatives caught hold of her and brutally assaulted her in full public view. The girl was then tied to a pillar of a house and beaten up again.

Video clips of the assault are now going widely viral on social media. The incident has spread outrage among people who demanded stringent action against the accused women.

Sources said the family members of the girl did not approve of her relationship with the boy. They had asked the girl to stay away from the boy and had restricted her movement. However, the girl slipped away from whom to meet her boyfriend. After the family members came to know that the girl had gone to Leprosy Colony to meet her boyfriend, they rushed there and caught hold of her.

The police has decided to record the statement of the girl under Section 161 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
