Why not peacock? Opposition targets government over new Parliament uniform

NEW DELHI,SEPT 12 : Opposition parties have lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Narendra Modi-led central government over the new uniforms for Parliament staff, alleging that it has ‘lotus’, BJP’s election symbol, printed on it.

Taking it to micro-blogging site X (formerly Twitter), Congress MP Manickam Tagore said, “Why is the government not ready to put Tiger in the Parliament staff’s dress, because Tiger is the national animal. Why are they not ready to put the Peacock, which is the national bird, in the dress? But they chose to put the Lotus in the dress code of the Parliamentary staff, because the BJP’s symbol is the Lotus.”

Manickam Tagore further said, “How cheap they are. They did it in the G20 also. Now also they are doing it and saying it is the national flower.”

“This kind of pettiness is not right. Hope the BJP grows up and not make the Parliament a one-sided partisan thing,” he alleged.

Another opposition party, NCP, attacked the government over the issue.

“By printing the ‘Lotus’ symbol on uniforms of Parliament staff, the BJP is trying to turn our ‘Temple of Democray’ into a political arena,” NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto said.

“The BJP is misusing the Parliament for personal propaganda. The August House belongs to the people of India, not to a political party,” he added.

NEW UNIFORM FOR PARLIAMENT STAFF

Ahead of the five-day special session, the Union government launched a new uniform for Parliament staff with an ‘Indian’ touch.

The new uniform includes a magenta or deep pink Nehru jacket for the bureaucrats, who earlier used to wear a bandhgala suit during Parliamentary proceedings.

Their shirt has also been replaced. Now, they will don a deep pink coloured shirt with a lotus flower motif. While the employees will don khaki-colored pants. The dress of the marshals in both houses has also been changed. They will wear Manipuri turbans.

The attire of the security personnel at the Parliament building will also be changed. Instead of safari suits, they will be given camouflage dresses, similar to the military.
