Top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat move SC seeking FIR against WFI chief

NEW DELHI,APR 24 : Top wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, have moved the Supreme Court and sought the registration of an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president, Brij Bhushan Singh, after sexual harassment allegations were levelled against him.

A writ petition has been filed under Article 32 on behalf of the wrestlers, including a minor. The Delhi Police Commissioner has been asked to register the FIR against the WFI chief, the plea stated.

The petition alleges that there was an inordinate delay in the registration of the FIR against the WFI president even after serious charges including that of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) had been pressed against him.

The tussle between the wrestlers and Brij Bhushan Singh has continued for around three months now.

On April 23, the wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat held a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Will continue to fight until we get justice, say wrestlers after resuming protest at Jantar Mantar

Phogat also said in a tweet that despite many attempts to register an FIR with the Delhi Police against the WFI president, their efforts have gone in vain.

Back in January, the likes of Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik levelled allegations against the federation chief for sexually harassing players.

Phogat had alleged that the WFI president had been harassing female wrestlers for years. The government, therefore, formed a committee, comprising of senior wrestlers Yogeshwar Dutt and Mary Kom, to delve deep into the matter. However, the report is yet to be made public.
