Telangana official caught taking bribe of Rs 84,000, cries on camera

Telangana, Feb 20 :  An executive engineer associated with Telangana’s Tribal Welfare Engineering Department was arrested on Monday by anti-corruption officials after she was caught red-handed for accepting a bribe of Rs 84,000.

The official, K Jaga Jyothi, had demanded a bribe from the complainant, Bodukarr Ganganna, a contractor, to perform an official duty that was already “sanctioned” in a bill about Nizamabad.

A video of her weeping on camera after she was caught taking the bribe went viral on social media.

After receiving the complaint, anti-corruption officials conducted an operation and caught Jyothi accepting money in the form of a bribe.

Officials conducted a phenolphthalein test on Jyothi. This test is a presumptive blood test wherein the chemical, phenolphthalein, is used to detect the possible presence of haemoglobin.

When phenolphthalein breaks down, it turns pink, making it a vital tool in crime scenes. So, if a person handles documents or cash, traces of the phenolphthalein solution stick to their hands and the pink colour is seen when it comes in contact with a mild base.

Officials said the right-hand fingers of Jyothi tested positive in the phenolphthalein test and that she performed her duty dishonestly to obtain undue advantage.

The accused officer has been arrested and will be produced before a court in Hyderabad.
