BHUBANESWAR, FEB. 27: The Odisha police is planning to raise a special force to check the growing crime taking place on National Highways in the state.

“A letter has been written to Crime Branch asking to provide detailed list about the crimes reported from locations on the NH in the past three years. After receiving the list, the special force will be formed. A proposal in this regard has been sent to Odisha government for approval,” state Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma said on Monday.

As per the reports by Dr Sharma, the move came in view of the inconveniences occurring with people visiting Odisha from outside state and country. As they are alien to the state, they used to lodge complaint with police of their respective states when they face any trouble here for which it is getting delayed in police investigation into the cases.

The crimes continued unabated on the National Highways especially that run through Berhampur, Bhubaneswar and Khurdha where the criminals attack the commuters for loot.

As the police personnel in various police limits face difficulties for patrolling on the highways, the department is planning to form a special police force, he said.

Not only the special force, but also police outposts will be constructed at some prominent locations of National Highways in the state. Apart from checking the crimes, the special police force and outposts, each comprising an officer in ASI rank and 12 constables and havlidars, will reach the accident site and admit the victims to hospitals, Dr Sharma said.
