Bhubaneswar, Feb. 27: A priest at Odisha’s ancient Lingaraj Temple sustained serious injuries after falling from a height of 20 feet while carrying the Mahadeep—the sacred lamp—to the Sikhar (temple peak) during the Mahashivratri ritual.
The incident occurred around 10 pm, shocking devotees who had gathered to witness the ceremonial lighting of the Mahadeep, a tradition symbolizing divine blessings. The injured priest, identified as Jogendra Samartha, was swiftly transported to Capital Hospital for medical attention.
According to witnesses, Jogendra, who has been performing this ritual for over 30 years, slipped and fell during the ascent, suffering severe injuries to his face. Unconfirmed reports suggest that he may have also fractured one of his legs.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan visited the hospital to check on the priest’s condition. Speaking to the media, Minister Harichandan assured, “The injured priest is receiving the best possible care and is recovering. Others who sustained minor injuries from the burning oil are also stable. There is no need for concern.”
Two other priests and a police officer were also injured as burning oil spilled during the accident. They were treated for minor burns at Capital Hospital.
Babu Singh, the local Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, also visited the hospital and expressed relief over the priest’s recovery. “Jogendra Bhai is a dedicated servant of Lord Shiva. He carries the Mahadeep not only on Mahashivratri but almost 24 times a year. His commitment to this sacred duty is unmatched,” he said.
The incident has cast a shadow on the otherwise joyous festivities, with devotees praying for the priest’s swift recovery. Meanwhile, temple authorities are reviewing safety protocols to prevent such mishaps in the future.
