Koraput (Odisha), Oct. 22: Palpable tension mounted in Odisha’s Koraput as a man, suspected to be involved in a murder incident, allegedly escaped from police custody on Saturday evening.
The family members of the deceased got angry over the development and, as a mark of protest, gheraoed the local Town Police Station for a few hours.
Reports said Abhishek Majhi from REF Colony was allegedly murdered on December 13, 2022. Though the family members of the deceased lodged a complaint about the incident at Koraput Town Police Station, police could not make much headway in the case.
Later, the family members of the deceased came to know that a person named Rahul Bagh from Hanaguda area near Koraput Railway Station was telling some people to have killed Majhi. Subsequently, they caught Rahul and handed him over to the police.
In Koraput Town Police Station, Rahul feigned to go to the toilet to attend his call of nature. The police officials asked him to go to the toilet on the upstairs. When he did not return from the upstairs, the police suspected something amiss. They found that Rahul had escaped by jumping off the balcony.
Following the development, the irate family members of the deceased and local people staged a demonstration and gheraoed the police station alleging lackadaisical attitude and negligence by the police.
Tension ran high at the police station premises. Later, the situation came under control after police officials held discussions with the agitators.
“As the police did nothing in the investigation, we caught the murderer of my brother with the help of the public and the accused also confessed to the crime. However, the police intervened and asked us not to take the law into our hands. We then handed over the accused to the police. However, he managed to escape from the police custody within half an hour. The police is not helping us as we are poor people,” said Nikita Majhi, sister of the deceased.
However, no comments from police could be obtained in this regard.
