Death toll in Odisha crosses 100-mark with six patients falling prey to pandemic

Rayagada, July 21: Karunakar Raika, the Sub-Collector cum ADM was on Covid duty for the last one month. He is survived by his wife, three young daughters and a 12-old son.

Sources said though Raika was unwell for last one month and had sought a leave for treatment, his application was rejected. He was asked to look after a Covid care centre in Paralkhemundi town where he got infected with the coronavirus.

The ADM breathed his last while being referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack from MKGC Medical College, Berhampur.

On Tuesday, the death toll in Odisha due to coronavirus breached 100 mark with six more persons succumbing to the virus in the last 24 hours. The total fatalities in the state rose to 103.

The state, meanwhile, reported 647 new cases of coronavirus taking the overall positive case tally in the State to 18757. Of the total cases, 431 were detected from various quarantine facilities while the remaining 216 cases are local contacts.

The highest number of 225 cases was reported from Ganjam followed by 84 from Cuttack, 68 from Khurda, 47 from Rayagada, 40 from Balasore and 37 from Angul.

Similarly, Koraput reported 28 cases, Sundergarh 22, Kendrapada 13, Bhadrak 12, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri and Sambalpur 10 cases each, Keonjhar 8, Jagatsinghpur 7, Kandhamal and Bolangir 5 cases each, Bargarh and Nayagarh 4 cases each, Mayurbhanj 3, Nabarangpur and Jajpur 2 cases each and Sonepur 1 case.

A total of 8,042 samples were tested in Odisha in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative number of tests conducted so far to 4,01,644. The active cases in the State stand at 5714 while 12,910 persons have recovered from the disease.
