Farmers empowered through organic cotton-based agroforestry training in Odisha

Balangir (Odisha), Dec. 12: A three-day technology training program on Organic Cotton-Based Agroforestry Systems concluded successfully on December 11, 2024.

Organized under the aegis of the World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) and Reforest’Action initiative, the event empowered over 300 farmers, farm women, and rural youth from the Belpada, Saintala, and Muribahal blocks of Balangir district with sustainable farming knowledge.

Expert Guidance on Sustainable Agriculture

The training program was spearheaded by renowned agroforestry experts Dr. Shiv Kumar Dhyani and Dr. Aqeel Hasan Rizvi from the World Agroforestry Organization, New Delhi. They provided comprehensive guidance on organic cotton farming principles integrated with agroforestry techniques. Dr. Archna Singh, a Research Scientist from the same organization, highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of agroforestry, emphasizing biodiversity conservation and long-term sustainability.

Insights from Regional Experts

Scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Balangir, including Dr. Sagarika Muna, Dr. Manoj Kumar Barik, and Dr. Satyamaya Sathpathy, shared critical insights on topics such as establishing nutri-gardens, marketing cotton through Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and effective soil health management. Former District Agriculture Officer Sri Joshobanta Sahu discussed tailored organic cotton farming practices, emphasizing their potential for increased productivity and profitability.

Agroforestry as a Game Changer

Prof. Subash Chandra Mahapatra, Principal Scientist of AICRP (Agroforestry) from Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, delivered a compelling presentation on the economic benefits of agroforestry. He described how integrating agroforestry into cotton farming could diversify income sources, improve land use, and build resilience against climate change. Prof. Mahapatra also stressed agroforestry’s role in boosting soil carbon sequestration and mitigating climate impacts.

Former Project Director of the Watershed Mission, Balangir, Sri Somnath Sahu, reinforced the importance of watershed management. He elaborated on effective water and soil resource management techniques to achieve self-sufficiency and enhance agricultural productivity.

The event was meticulously coordinated by Sri Badri Narayan Sahu, Project Coordinator of World Agroforestry, supported by officials Sri Sadasiba Sahu, Sri Soumya Ranjan, and other dedicated team members. Their efforts ensured the seamless execution of the training program.
