Cold wave to continue in Delhi as North India braces for chilly start to 2025
NEW DELHI,DEC 28 : North India, including the capital Delhi, will see a chilly start to the New Year, with the weather office predicting a significant drop in minimum temperatures across several regions. Heavy rains at the fag end of the year will only intensify the ongoing cold wave conditions in the first week of 2025.
As intermittent rain continues in several parts of Northwest India, the IMD has predicted a fall in the minimum temperature by 3-5 degrees Celsius in the next two days.
Similarly, West and Central India are expected to witness a 3-5 degrees Celsius drop over the next three days, while East India will experience a dip in temperature by 2-4 degrees Celsius.
Severe cold wave conditions are expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh on December 30 and 31. Isolated pockets in Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Rajasthan will also experience cold wave conditions in the first half of January.
In Kashmir, heavy snowfall led to the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, stranding tourists. Flight and railway operations were also disrupted, crippling normal life. Srinagar and other areas in the plains of Kashmir also received the season’s first snowfall on Friday, blanketing the region in white.
The weather department has also predicted dense to very dense fog conditions in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan from December 28 to 30. Other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal, will face similar conditions at varying intervals through early January.
