Caught on camera slapping engineer, Maharashtra MLA calls it her natural reaction

Maharashtra,June 21 :  A video showing a Maharashtra Independent woman legislator holding the collar and slapping a junior civic engineer in full public view has gone viral on social media. She also called him a ‘nalayak’ (useless).

Geeta Jain, the MLA from Mira Bhayandar in Thane district, slapped the engineer after officials from Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation evicted the occupants of a house and demolished the structure without notice. The occupants, including women and children, were forced to stay on the road.

In the video, Geeta Jain was seen rebuking an official over the demolition of the house. She then held the collar of the junior civic officer and slapped him.

Speaking to a local news channel, Geeta Jain said she was miffed when she saw the civic official laughing at the women who were crying when their house was being demolished. She asserted her move to slap him was a natural reaction.

Talking about the incident, Geeta Jain said only a portion of the house razed by junior civic engineers was illegal and its occupants had promised to remove the illegal part.

“The illegal construction was proving to be a hurdle for a builder and not to any government amenity or road. Still, these civic officials went there and instead of demolishing the illegal portion, they razed the entire house,” she claimed.

The MLA alleged that civic officials pulled the hair of women who were opposing the demolition of their house.

Geeta Jain claimed the two engineers were carrying out the demolition work on a private piece of land in connivance with builders. She said she did not regret her action and is ready to face any punishment.

“I will raise this issue in the Assembly. Let him (the engineer who was slapped) file a case against me… I am ready to face it. How can one tolerate civic officials pulling down structures built on private land?” the legislator asked.

Geeta Jain won the 2019 Assembly election as an Independent but later extended support to the Shiv Sena after Uddhav Thackeray became the Chief Minister. However, after Eknath Shinde’s rebellion in June last year, Geeta Jain is now in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) camp.
