Assam’s ‘Lady Singham’ cop killed in road accident in Nagaon

ASSAM ,MAY 17 : A woman sub-inspector of Assam Police, who was entangled in various controversies, lost her life after her private car collided with a container truck in Nagaon district, officials said.

The accident occurred early on Tuesday at Sarubhugia village under Jakhalabandha police station of Kaliabor Sub-Division, news agency PTI reported.

The deceased, Junmoni Rabha, popularly known as ‘Lady Singham’ or ‘Dabangg cop’, named after the two popular Bollywood films, was not wearing her uniform and alone in her car at the time of the accident.

“After getting intimation at around 2:30 am, a police patrol party reached the spot and took her to a nearby hospital. Doctors there declared her dead,” Jakhalabandha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Pawan Kalita said.

The woman cop, who was the in-charge of the Morikolong police outpost, was known for acting tough on criminals. She was in the news for her alleged involvement in financial irregularities.

Last year, she arrested her fiancé on charges of fraud and was subsequently arrested in the same case. A court in Majuli district remanded her to judicial custody, and she was suspended from the service. However, her suspension was lifted later and she rejoined service.

The CID said it will probe the accident and an extortion case filed against her before her death.

Police seized the container truck, whose driver fled the spot after the accident. The truck had bore the registration number of Uttar Pradesh.

Nagaon Superintendent of Police Leena Doley reached the accident site on Wednesday morning to take stock of the situation.

Police are yet to ascertain why the sub-inspector was wearing civil clothes and travelling alone without any security in her personal vehicle towards Upper Assam.

Junmoni Rabha was cremated in Guwahati following a post-mortem examination in Nagaon Civil Hospital, according to PTI.

Suspecting foul play, her family demanded an impartial investigation into the accident.

Her family members, too, were unaware about her movement. They requested Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to conduct an impartial probe to find out the truth about her demise.

Sumitra Rabha, the deceased woman cop’s mother alleged that it was a case of pre-planned murder “by some unidentified racket” and demanded justice by punishing the perpetrators of the “planfully created” accident.

Subarna Bodo, Junmoni Rabha’s aunt, said, “On Monday night, a team of higher police officials conducted a raid at Junmoni’s official quarter in Nagaon and seized around Rs 1 lakh. Her mother was also present during the raid.”

An FIR against Junmoni Rabha was registered on Monday at North Lakhimpur Police Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) such as criminal conspiracy, dacoity, robbery, attempt to cause death, wrongful confinement and extortion, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh said.

The case was filed based on a complaint by a woman.

The DGP claimed the police from Lakhimpur and Nagaon districts “took lawful action pursuant to registration of crime”.

“In the wake of request of a fair probe from various sections of society into FIR Number 0183/2023 (the North Lakhimpur case) and death of SI Junmoni Rabha, it has been decided to transfer investigation to CID Assam,” he said in a tweet.
