Care for Mother Earth: AM/NS India conducts awareness on climate change

Paradip/ Bhubaneswar, June 10: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) observed 49th World Environment Day across its operating locations in Odisha to raise mass awareness on the current climate change and global environment concerns related to global warming, air and water pollution, rise in sea level, solid and hazardous waste management, and net zero carbon emission.

Marking the day, some environment related initiatives were launched at its Paradip Pellet Plant including a new Surface Water Treatment Plant, Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AAQMSs) and Road Dust Sweeping machines.

To mark the day, various programmes like debate, online quiz,skit play, environmental message and poster competition on environment were organised, where the employees and their family members and contractual workers participated. The contests were organised on this year’s theme of World Environment Day – “Only One Earth”.

This year’s celebration included mass plantation drives across its locations. The plantation drive program for planting more than 20,000 saplings was launched by Chief Guest Mr Puskar Chandra Behera, Regional Officer, Odisha State Pollution Control Board, Paradeep in presence of Mr G Suresha, Executive Director, AM/NS India, Odisha Facility, Mr USR Raju, Head-Pellet Plant, Mr Shailendra Sah, Head-Power Plant and MrAkash Mohapatra, Head-Environment, Odisha.

Addressing the closing ceremony, Sri Behera appreciated the company for taking necessary steps for managing various hazardous and other wastes in the plant and meeting the quality of ambient air and emission through stack well within the applicable standard norms. He appreciated the management for taking steps in achieving Zero Liquid Discharge to safeguard of the environment and was pleased to note that AM/NS India has taken various steps to control water pollution with installation of Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) and Sewage  Treatment Plant (STP)and has installedElectrostatic Precipitator (ESP)and Scrubbers to prevent air pollution.

On the occasion, Mr G Suresha said, “We all have the immense responsibility to protect our environment. Among so many other measures, on a personal basis we can start doing more and more plantation activities for soil conservation and thus creating a clean and green environment in and around our surroundings for a better future”. 

 Similarly, the World Environment Day along with plantation drives was celebrated at the Beneficiation Plant at Dabuna and Mining locations at Sagasahi and Thakurani. At Dabuna, the plantation and housekeeping drive programme were organized at Ball-6 Fabrication Area and Poster and Slogan competitions were also conducted to create awareness on the environment. At Thakuraniand Sagasahi Mines,the employees planted fruit bearing saplings and the workers participated in quiz and debate competitions.

The CSR Wing of AM/NS India conducted an awareness campaign at Nuagarh High school, Paradipand organized a quiz and debate competition to create awareness about protecting the environment among the students. The students and teachers of the school and officials of the company planted fruit bearing and medicinal sapling in the school campus on the occasion.
