One more student alleges ragging at BJB College in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: While the controversy over Ruchika Mohanty suicide case is yet to die down, one more student has come up with allegations of ragging in the BJB College campus here on Wednesday.

The student of the Plus II Second Year (Commerce) of the BJB Higher Secondary School today filed a complaint with the Badagada Police Station alleging ragging and physical assault by some seniors of the college.

The student in his complaint alleged that some of the inmates of Ambedkar Hostel first scolded and then slapped him. Then, they asked him to come to the hostel. When he refused to do so they dragged him in the middle of the road and beat him up. Thereafter, they took him to the hostel and locked the gate.

In the complaint, he further added that the college seniors also took away his mobile phone and cash of around Rs 2000.

It may be recalled here that a girl student of the BJB college had died by suicide less than three weeks ago which had rocked the Odisha assembly.

Ruchika Mohanty, a Plus III History (Hons) student, had blamed three seniors of the college of mentally harassing her. She had stated in the suicide note recovered from near her body that she was under depression after being constantly ragged and tortured by three of her seniors. However, the deceased had not revealed the identities of the students.

The Opposition BJP and Congress had created ruckus in the assembly forcing the Minister of State for Home Tushar Kanti Behera to make a statement in the House. The Minister had termed the incident a tragic and sensitive matter.

Yesterday, Navnirman Yuva Chatra Sangh (NYCS), the student wing of Nabanirman Krushak Sangh (NKS), had observed a dawn-to-dusk bandh demanding justice for Ruchika Mohanty. Though the bandh call evoked lukewarm response, several protestors were detained by Commissionerate Police here while they were proceding towards Naveen Niwas.
