10 killed after three-storey building collapses in Meerut amid rain, 5 rescued

UTTAR PRADESH, SEPT 15 : At least 10 people were killed after a three-storey building collapsed in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut amid heavy rain, police said on Sunday. So far, authorities have rescued a total of five people from the debris.

Of the 10 victims, there were four children, including a one-year-old. The incident took place on Saturday in Zakir Colony.

The deaths were confirmed by Meerut District Magistrate Deepak Meena, who said that the collapse was triggered by the continuous rain.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force are carrying out rescue operations at the site despite heavy showers.

Rescue personnel suspect that the building may have collapsed due to the rain. The building, which was reported to be about 35 years old, was also in a dilapidated condition.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took note of the incident and instructed the rescue personnel to expedite the relief work. He also directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured.

On September 7, eight people died and over 28 were injured when a three-story building housing godowns and a motor workshop collapsed in the Transport Nagar area of Lucknow. A truck parked near the building was also crushed by the collapse.
