BHUBANESWAR, JUNE 26: Once again good news for Odisha. Srabani Nanda, the ace Odisha sprinter, has qualified for the Rio Olympics to participate in the women’s 200-metre race event.

Srabani qualified for Olympics by covering 200 metres in just 23.07 seconds at the 26th International Meeting G.Kosanov Memorial in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The 24-year-old Srabani’s success came just a day after Dutee Chand of Odisha qualified for Rio Olympics in the women’s 100m event after meeting the qualification mark.

The 20-year-old Dutee clocked 11.30 seconds ahead of Anasstasia Tulapina (11.67 secs) of Kazakhstan and Mariya Mokrova (11.69) of Ukraine to run under the Olympic qualification mark of 11.32 seconds. That also bettered her own national record of 11.33 secs set at the Federation Cup in Delhi in April, when she missed the Olympic qualifying mark by one hundredth of a second.

It should be noted that Athlete Amiya Mallick of Odisha also bagged gold medal at the World Athletics Championships held at Kazakhstan on Saturday.

Bhubaneswar, June 2: The Odisha government on Thursday gave appointment to weightlifter Katulu Ravi Kumar in the police department for his outstanding contribution at highest levels.

The 28-year-old Commonwealth Games (CWG) gold medal winner has been appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) under direct recruitment of sportspersons in Odisha police.

“I thank Odisha government, people of the state and specially media persons for whom I have got this post so early. My target now is to participate in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In the last two years, I have tried to achieve the match fitness. I am expecting a call from the Indian Weightlifting Federation this September,” Ravi Kumar told media persons after receiving the appointment letter.

Ravi Kumar is the first sportsperson in the state to get a job in Group A category.

The Berhampur boy had shot to fame in 2010 after bagging gold in the 69 kg category at the CWG held in New Delhi.

Earlier on May 23, the state government had given appointments to sprinters Shrabani Nanda and Dutee Chand Dutee Chand as Junior Manager in Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) and Assistant Manager in Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) respectively.

NEW DELHI/BHUBANESWAR, MAY 23: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday gave appointment letters to two of the country’s top sprinters – Dutee Chand and Shrabani Nanda – for their outstanding achievements in national and international events.

The CM handed over appointment letters to the duo at Odisha Bhawan, New Delhi.

Duttee has been appointed assistant manager at Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) and Shrabani got recruitment letter as junior manager at Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Limited (OHPCL).

Dutee (19) and Shrabani (24), both hailing from Odisha, have been chasing each other over the past year at different national and international events.

“For the last decade and a half, it has been the considered policy of the state government to nurture sports talents through quality training and proper infrastructure both in urban and rural locations with particular emphasis on backward and tribal areas of the state. The state adopted a rule for direct recruitment of meritorious sportspersons of the state in Odisha Police last year to recognise their outstanding performance and to provide them the desired financial security. And, under the said rule, 59 sports persons have been provided employment till now,” Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said.

“The state has adopted yet another Rule this year for direct recruitment of outstanding sports persons in executive capacities in different state government undertakings,” Mr Patnaik added.
